The Obama Administration and the leadership of Congress seem obsessed with borrowing our way to prosperity as the solution to our financial problems. The ironic thing is that our economic problems were caused by trying to borrow our way to prosperity. This was encouraged and done by both the public and private sector. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were created by the federal government, and singled out for special Congressional oversight. Representative Barney Frank notoriously said that they should not be subject to the same standards of fiscal scrutiny as banks are. He said we ought to roll the dice in favor of encouraging home ownership. We rolled the dice, and everyone lost, most especially those that Representative Frank was trying to help.

So the Obama Administration’s strategy to get out of this mess is to borrow and spend as fast as possible. Currently forty percent of our spending is paid for by borrowing. What happens when we have borrowed so much that our creditors conclude that we can’t pay the interest on our debt? The Federal Government is borrowing and spending like there is no tomorrow. Are we going to keep borrowing until the United States becomes insolvent?

This year, our government will spend about 3.6 trillion dollars, and take in 2.2 trillion dollars. So our government will borrow 1.4 trillion dollars to keep up with its spending binge. I predict the federal government will borrow even more next year.

This is the first time I’ve ever linked to a campaign web site for a Democrat. Hell, I may even cough up $20 for his campaign.

I’m linking because I agree with his two issues. I agree with his position on teachers’ unions and illegal immigration.

The one point everyone can agree on is that health care costs a lot in the United States. The real reason that health care costs so much is we spend a great deal on preventable illnesses. How much do we spend every year treating preventable illnesses? For the record, I am overweight. In the last ten years, I’ve gained 80 pounds. A few months ago, I realized this and started on the South Beach Diet. I’ve lost over 20 pounds so far. I probably still could lose another 30 to 50 pounds, but I’m already a little bit healthier. It is a small step in the right direction, but it is the first step in a plan. I’m going to continue the South Beach Diet, and start exercising as the weather gets warmer.

If I hadn’t made this decision, I’d be getting fatter and fatter and at increasing risk of heart disease, stroke or diabetes. As it is now, my risk of these illnesses is slowly dropping every day. It’s my body and my health, and it is my responsibility.

Sadly, my wife’s uncle passed away last year. He got very sick, and died a few months later. The guy drank two of his three daily meals and smoked cigarettes. I don’t know what his death certificate said killed him. But I would argue that his cause of death was. I’d never be so crude as to say this to his widow’s face, but the guy smoked and drank himself to death.

My fellow readers, it is time for you to do something about health care costs in this country. Look in the mirror. Are you as unhealthy as I was? You can do something about it. If you smoke, why not quit? If you’re overweight, why not try the South Beach Diet? If you have more than two or three drinks a day, why not cut back? It’s your health and your body.

So, the Democrats have passed the Health Care Reform bill in the House. The Republicans already have a web site up with the goal of taking back 40 seats in November, and firing Nancy Pelosi! They have the goal of raising $402,010 dollars in 40 hours. So far they have raised $191,530, and there is still over 31 hours to go!

Dr. Dan Benishek is running against Bart Stupak in Michigan’s 1st District, and so far his Facebook page has almost 12,000 fans.

I don’t think the Democrats realized the price that they will be paying for passing this bill.
